Secure your Steam-Account against Hijacking!

Dear ladies and gentlemen!

Recently I noticed being spammed by those "get free games, click this link"-shit by people on my friendslist
that obviously got their steam account hijacked.

There's two things you can do to prevent losing your steam account:
  • NEVER click on any strange links that promise you free games, nothing in this world is for free, especially not from Valve!
  • Verify your email-address with steam, that way your password and email-address CANNOT be changed by anyone but yourself!

To verify your mail-address right click on the Steam icon in your taskbar, select "Settings" and look for "Verify Contact Address"
(or something similar, cannot remember correctly since my address is verfied since they day they established that) in
the tab "Account".
After that Valve will send you an email with a link to verfy it.
Take a look at "Account" again and you will find a "( Verified )" next to your mail-address, your account is now safe!

It's people who actually click the links who encourage them even if the person may not know or not, but it's common sense to ask what anything is and usually the person doesn't answer because it's a bot.

Also another thing to watch out for is forum bot spammers that post links to random sites that could lead to trojans and possibly keyloggers.

Re: Secure your Steam-Account against Hijacking!

Upon reading this I noticed something hadn't been said that I felt really needed to be. That is the fact that a lot of times you won't know these website's aren't the real thing because they copy the source code for the front page, and then setup a form to email your information to them when you log in on their "free steam games". If steam is going to offer ANY free games, they will be automatically added to your account, as I have received a few free expansions with games that I've bought, and received them days-months later. I've been playing steam games for quite a few years now, well before the addition of the actual permanent steam ids, and this type of scamming/phishing has been going on since day one. While it is still less often that these people will get someone's account, they still occasionally do. Just take caution with your account, just like you would your social security card, or your bank card.

http://www.steampowered.com/nvidia/ and http://www.steampowered.com/ati_offer1a/ <----- I think is the only time steam gives you permanent free games.. And it's only if you have a nividia or ATI card depending on what link you click..
